Ancient Greek C Lyceum Material File

Each Thematic Unit contains Teaching Units. The Reference Texts set out the central issue of each Teaching Unit and are accompanied by comments on their key concepts. The Parallel Texts, of which there are more than one so that your professor can choose whichever he sees fit, do not come exclusively from ancient philosophy: they are Byzantine or newer philosophical texts, contemplative texts or even poems. Thus, the dialogue of ancient thought with later moments of Greek or European thought, the continuities and discontinuities, the elements that remain alive even today, are highlighted. Self-Energy Texts offer the right material to deepen your understanding of the ancient Greek language. Finally, the decoration of the book consists of images with sculptures by modern Greek artists, chosen according to the themes of the units and the ancient Greek world.

All texts are introduced with short notes that contain the elements that are not just encyclopedic information; they are the necessary context in which each text can be understood, they are indicators of its reading. Texts are always open to understanding, which cannot, however, ignore their context of reference.

The purpose of the File is not to introduce you to philosophy and its problems; after all, you have done that in the Philosophy class at the 2nd Lyceum. And the purpose of the Parallel Texts is not to learn in general about the thought of each anthologized author. We all know that it would be important to be able to read an entire text, e.g. a platonic dialogue. But the File is an anthology, another way of teaching, also tested since antiquity: it gives us the opportunity to come into contact with great texts of ancient philosophy.
