Description

Texts of Modern Greek Literature A Issue A of Lyceum

Regarding the principles of modern Greek literature, there is no unanimity among its scholars. Many consider Byzantine and modern Greek literature as an indivisible whole. Others consider 1453 as the end of Byzantine literature and the beginning of modern Greek literature. But this division, however much it agrees with the division of history, is arbitrary, because long before 1453, during the 10th century, as we shall see, it begins to the modern Greek language and the modern Greek culture are formed, which slowly differentiate themselves from the Byzantine language and the Byzantine culture. Of course, those characteristic elements, which reveal the transition from one era to another, are not always easy to identify, because their formation usually takes place at a slow pace and their marking is difficult. These basic characteristics, which testify to the transition from one era to another, can be traced in the language, the expressive ways, the lyricism, the thematic renewal and the gradual formation of the modern Greek consciousness.
