Description

Sophocles Antigone Thucydides Pericles Epitaph B Lyceum

Drama is a complex poetic creation that was the highest intellectual expression of classical times. In this poetic genre, elements from the Epic and Lyrical poetry were used, while when it was presented before the audience, the speech was accompanied by music and orchestration because the drama was not intended for a simple recitation but for the performance of a shocking event, which developed like a live reality in front of the viewers.
The drama came from religious events and was connected from the beginning with the most brilliant festival of Dionysus, the Great Dionysia, which had a dominant position in the Athenian calendar. Our ancestors from long ago gave their religious events a dramatic character (i.e. form of performance): in Argos and Samos they represented the marriage of Zeus and Hera, in Crete the birth of Zeus, in Delphi teenagers acted out the struggle of Apollo with the dragon even in the Eleusinian mysteries they called the secret rites dromena. But in the ceremonies of Dionysus, the events were brighter and more solemn.
