Description

Texts of Modern Greek Literature B Lyceum

SINCE 1880 THINGS begin to change and poetry and prose turn in other directions and use new means of expression. This new orientation is not accidental. It should be related to the internal restructuring of the state observed from 1881 onwards, when the government, now independent, passed into the hands of Charilaos Trikoupis. During this period, a coordinated recovery effort is observed with the aim of industrializing the country, strengthening the economy and sanitizing public life, as well as the creation of development projects of public utility, such as the opening of the Isthmus of Corinth, the expansion of the railway and road network, the construction of port and land improvement projects, etc. All this resulted in the development of trade and shipping, as well as the displacement of the rural population towards the urban center with their corresponding demographic expansion. But the greatest population growth was recorded by Athens, which from 45,000 inhabitants in 1870, exceeded 180,000 in 1896.

This transformative tendency of Greek society dictated the creation of factories in the great center and the establishment of schools; moreover, the publication increasingly
and more magazines and newspapers in this period proves that the print has already passed into the lives of the inhabitants of the big cities.

The events that occurred in the national sphere should also be related to these internal rearrangements. With the Treaty of Constantinople (1881), Thessaly and Arta were granted to Greece, which resulted in a corresponding increase in population and arable land.

The inner restructuring also goes hand in hand with the creative effort for a more synchronized spiritual life. One side covers the shift towards the study of popular culture and the development of Folklore (Nikolaos Politis) and the other the struggle for the prevalence of the vernacular, especially after 1888, when My Journey of Psycharis was published.

Both of these movements of the 80's will be the main characteristic elements of poetry and especially of prose which at this time is experiencing leaps and bounds.
