Description

Syntax of the Ancient Greek A B C Lyceum

In order to express a thought, a desire or an emotion, i.e. to form speech, words, as in the modern Greek language, are put together, i.e. they come close to each other, according to certain rules. These rules, syntactic rules, are examined in the part of Grammar called Syntax.

In the Syntax of ancient Greek are considered:
A' The sentence and its terms, i.e. the elements that make it up,
B' The relation of the sentences to each other and
C' Figures of speech, i.e. the idiosyncrasies of speech that are made in violation of syntactic or other linguistic rules.

The study of Syntax has as its main purposes to show the way in which words work within the discourse, to give the meaning of the various syntactic elements with which a sentence is formed, and finally to help mainly in the understanding and correct translation of an ancient text in modern Greek.

The Syntax of the ancient Greek language does not differ much from the Syntax of the new one. In many places, the syntactical rules of the ancient language were kept the same in the new language, since the latter is nothing more than the continuation and evolution of the same language, the ancient Greek.
