The teaching of Mathematics in the 1st Lyceum has two central objectives. The completion of the mathematical education that the students acquired in Primary and High School and at the same time the transition to a more advanced, theoretical mathematical way of thinking. Key elements of this way of thinking are the "rigorous" use of mathematical terminology and notation, the definitions of concepts and the theoretical proof of claims. The following contribute to the approach of these goals: – The inclusion of the students' pre-existing mathematical knowledge in a theoretical framework, their expansion and deepening. – The active involvement of students in investigating problems, generating and testing hypotheses, developing problem-solving strategies and multiple evidence-based approaches, developing different ways of thinking (inductive, generative). – The understanding and use of mathematical language, symbols and representations of mathematical objects, the development of the ability to translate from physical to mathematical language and vice versa as well as the development of students' ability to communicate mathematically. – The conceptual connections within Mathematics but also between Mathematics and other cognitive areas. – Developing the ability to use Mathematics as a tool for understanding and interpreting the world. – The consideration of Mathematics as a cultural, historically evolving human creation.
