Saturation the Villages of Oblivion

The book "Korestia, the villages of oblivion" is a tour of a forgotten valley at the foot of Vernos (also known as Vici after the name of its peak), between Kastoria and Prespa. Angelos Sinanis reconstructs the image of the region through the eyes of the traveler giving an overall picture of the landscape, the people and their stories, the special architecture of the region with sun-baked bricks and the archaeological wealth of ancient Oresteia.

Its pages offer a coherent presentation of the social and historical path of the place and its inhabitants, long before but also after the integration of 1912-1913 into the Greek body, reaching up to the present day.

The goal of the book is the residential, geopolitical and historical reconstruction of the region, the reconstruction of both the culture and the tragic moments of the previous generations through the remains of the life and works bequeathed to us. It is based on historical sources and additionally on field research in the settlements and the testimonies of their people. It provides chronological information on the archaeological data, religious and other monuments, the first and current settlers, the communities, societies and their work with references to the interesting architecture of raw-sunbaked brick, so as to allow the outcome of conclusions.

The body of the book is structured in nine chapters: Geography, Nomenclature - Archaeological findings, Macedonian Struggle and the main part of the work with the description of the 23 villages that make up the Korestia of Kastoria and Florina, separately for each one. The present volume concludes with Migration from the wider Koresteia-Prespa area, Population Growth, Renamings and their significance over time, Pear-shaped Skylights, an interesting architectural theme found in many examples in temples in the area and a tribute to Prespa National Park, to the scientists and their contribution to its promotion and the Itineraries that tourists can take in it. The last chapter is a tribute to the Refugee Children of the Greek Civil War, who found themselves in Hungary from Korestia.
